2010 Mazdaspeed 3

With the new 2010 Mazda3 on its way, the next logical question for any gearhead worth his driving shoes is when we'll set our eyes on the next Mazdaspeed version. Well, we have our answer already if the latest batch of spy shots are to be believed.

The current Mazdaspeed3, also known as the Mazda3 MPS in Europe and the Mazdaspeed Axela in the Japanese domestic market, is a veritable barn-stormer and Mazda's performance engineers will be eager to follow up with an even hotter version of the new model. This prototype, bearing all the hallmarks of the new 3 coupled with all manner of performance bolt-ons, was spotted lapping the vaunted Nürburgring Nordschleife wearing a bit of camo and a lot of speed. The shots reveal the presence of a big ol' hood scoop, oversized alloys, a full aero kit and dual exhaust. Of course, the next question is what engine will be crammed under that gaping bonnet vent, with some suggesting a revamped version of the current model's direct-inject 2.3-liter turbo four and others the Volvo-derived 2.5-liter five-cylinder turbo slated to crank out 300 hp in the new Euro-only Ford Focus RS. Tantalizing options, both, but we'll just have to wait and see what the Zoom-Zoom crew have in store for us.

Alfa 149 hatch

The Alfa 149 hatchback, a replacement for the 147, shares some familial styling cues with the MiTo, which in turn shares some lines with the 8C Competizione.  As a 3 or 5 door car, the performance will be there to back up the racy sheetmetal.  The 149 packs 120 horsepower, and it can reach as high as 250 with the choice of gas or diesel engine, veriously turbocharged.  The hotrod versions will also get a trick differential, dubbed Q2, which will aid in getting that power to the ground.  Expected to be released in mid 2009, it should make it's way to the North American market as it's rumored to adhere to US safety regulations.

AutoExpress reports that Mitsubishi has now greenlit an FQ400 version of the Lancer Evo X.  The name seems to indicate it will have 400 HP, compared to the 291 HP Evolution MR, so you can only imagine how much faster it will be than the US version.  Yes, the FQ will be UK-only, where it will be tuned and likely receive numerous upgraded components like turbocharger, exhaust, engine computer and fuel system.

2008 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution MR

With a top speed of at least 170 MPH and potentially 3.5 seconds for acceleration from 0-60 MPH, this car will be quick.  Expect to see upgraded aero styling, suspension, and larger brakes to keep up with the performance enhancments.  And last but not least, what also should be standard is a manual gearbox.  Should be on sale next year for those in the UK.

Nissan GTR R35 AMUSE

Click here to view the GT-R V-Spec Gallery

The prototype Nissan GT-R V-Spec, wearing the "Victory Specification" designation reserved for the ultra high-performance Nissan GT-R, has been caught lapping the famed Nürburgring at an incredible, if not simply unbelievable, 7:25 per lap. This, according to bystanders trackside.

Those on the ground in Germany claim the car is a barely credible 18 seconds faster around the Nordschleife than the standard GT-R, lapping in less than 7min 25sec. Forget the confusing lap times - all you need to know is that it's a blindingly fast performance, easily faster than a Porsche 911 Turbo and its ilk.

The GT-R V-Spec has a new front splitter, modified rear spoiler, and different wheels. A more extensive use of carbon fiber has reportedly reduced the weight by upwards of 330 pounds. Of course, Nissan engineers also tweaked the twin-turbo powerplant for another 70 horses... or so.

Tesla Roadster Rear Crash Test

So, back to the plot, how did the final certification tests go? Well, I still have some hair and it’s not all grey. Thanks to great design, structural analysis, build quality and well run test management, we have successfully completed the entire suite of dynamic impact testing to meet both FMVSS and, as importantly, our own very strenuous internal performance targets. This is a great achievement for Tesla; it takes us another (major) step closer to our final goal and is another demonstration that EVs are as real as any other vehicle on the road.

And while we’re on the FMVSS theme, while crash testing gets the headline attention there are roughly 40 other specific federally mandated requirements that apply to the Roadster. Tesla needed to meet all of these requirements in order to be in a position to affix the much coveted Manufacturer’s Certification Label on the car. Here’s a few that you may or may not be aware of.

TF106 Panasonic Toyota Formula One car

FIA has just announced a 10-year ban on engine development in Formula One. Teams will have to submit an engine to FIA by March 31, 2008, which they will then have to use through 2017. Speaking about the decision, FIA President Max Mosley said, "There is no need to develop an F1 engine any further. The engine runs at 19,000 rpm, which is far faster than any comparable engine. It sounds good, it's reliable and amazingly the six partially frozen engines of the current manufacturers are really evenly matched."

Chrysler LLC Launches Production of New 2008 Dodge Viper SRT10® at Conner Avenue Assembly Plant

  • 2008 Dodge Viper SRT10® hand-built at the Conner Avenue Assembly Plant
  • Additional 90 horsepower on tap from all-new 600-horsepower 8.4-liter Viper SRT10 V-10 engine built at Conner Avenue Assembly
the new 2008 Dodge Viper SRT10
Auburn Hills, Mich., Oct 24, 2007 - Chrysler LLC today announced the manufacturing launch of the new 2008 Dodge Viper SRT10®, which is being built at the company's Conner Avenue Assembly Plant in Detroit.

In a time when most manufacturing plants utilize hundreds of state-of-the-art robots to assemble vehicles, a unique plant in Detroit is producing hand-built performance vehicles.

At the Conner Avenue Assembly Plant, workers called "Craftspersons" hand-build the new Dodge Viper SRT10 and all-new 600-horsepower 8.4-liter SRT V-10 engine. Utilizing 26 work stations on a 705-foot-long assembly line, 48 hand-picked UAW workers assemble each vehicle. Each vehicle remains stationary for up to 49 minutes per work area as the Craftspersons make any necessary adjustments. This process eliminates traditional repair stations with all procedures verified by Craftsperson team members.
